This Week’s Websites to Read

15 Jan

Throughout the semester, I will post a few useful websites relevant to the weekly class topics and discussion. For this week, it’s about AP Style.

Purdue’s Online Writing Lab is worth reading, not only just on AP Style guidelines.

An Inspirational Day with Molly Currey

22 Sep

I had a great pleasure hosting  Molly Currey, executive creative director at Golin Harris and a Marquette alumna, who visited her alma mater last week.  She was kind enough to speak to my PR Writing class, and shared with us numerous professional insights and life wisdom. At the end of her talk, we were left in awe and inspired. (See Molly’s profile on Linkedin here)

Dear Class,

Molly Currey, executive creative director at Golin Harris and a Marquette alum, will visit her alma mater next Tuesday. She will also speak to our class on media relations.

Assignment 1: Prepare at least two questions for Molly. Take notes during her talk, and write a news release about her visit and her talk.

Remember that we don’t have class next Thursday, Sept. 20 because I will be out of town, attending a conference in Minneapolis. So use that class time on Thursday to write the release. The release should mention her advice to PR students, her campus visit, her career success and some biographical information. The release is due before Sept. 25 class on D2L.  I also need a hard copy of the press release and its accompanying planning sheet.

Assignment 2: Write a blog about three most important or valuable things you learned from Molly Currey. Include relevant examples. Due Sept. 27.

These two assignments demonstrate that PR writers should be able to use the same information to write for different objectives, formats and styles. And in this case–a news release and a blog post.

So, have fun!
