Welcome to PURE 3600: PR Writing Class!

26 Aug

Dear Class,

Welcome to PURE 3600: Public Relations Writing, and another semester at Marquette! I hope you had a restful and enjoyable summer break!

Now that you are re-energized for the new semester, I hope you are ready to spend the next 16 weeks to learn and practice the craft of PR writing in a variety of formats and media.

This course is designed to prepare you to develop the professional-level writing skills expected of PR practitioners.  We cover the basics of PR writing, including the principles of effective professional writing, understanding and reaching target audiences, finding and generating newsworthy information for print, broadcast, social media and the Web. You will study how to write and produce PR materials, including news releases, fact sheets, PSAs (audio and video), media advisories, brochures, SEO-based social media news releases, among others. The roles of the public relations practitioner, as well as ethical and legal issues in the public relations field, will also be covered.

We will use this site to access and read blog posts by your classmates. I have assigned each of you in a group for which you are responsible to read and comment blog entries by members of the group. (See blog groups on the right of this page.) More detailed instruction will be given later.

AP Stylebook is highly recommended.

I am hopeful that we together will make this class a great learning experience for all of us.  My philosophy in teaching and class administration is well reflected in the following article. So please read it.
